Ballett
The performance was conceived in 1979 for the festival The Art of Performance, Palazzo Grassi, Venice. Due to a last-minute cancellation, it was not performed. The performance premiere was on December 12, 2015, at the Rumpsti Pumsti Gallery, Berlin
Performance: Christina Kubisch
Mixer: Sound engineer
Procedure:
The vibrators are dressed in tutus and placed in two rows in the center of the mirror. The waltz begins. When the prelude to the waltz transitions into the actual waltz, the vibrators are switched on one after the other and placed back on the mirror surface. They begin to rotate in circular movements. At the beginning, a low rotation speed is set. After a while, the waltz sound is slowly faded out using the mixer and the noise of the rotating vibrators becomes audible via the contact microphones attached under the mirror surface. The vibrators are briefly lifted from the mirror one after the other, the highest rotation speed is set, and then they are placed back on the mirror. The vibrators move individually, in pairs, or in irregular groups. Some also fall over and should then be set up again. The noises vary greatly.
After a while, the vibrators are gradually turned off and placed at the edge of the mirror. A dancing pair of vibrators remains solo in the middle. The Strauss waltz is faded in again, and the sound from the contact microphones ends. After a short time, the waltz also ends.
At the end of the performance, the audience is invited to turn on the vibrators themselves and try them out on the mirror.
Duration of the performance: approx. 20 to 25 minutes.
