Vita

Christina Kubisch, born in Bremen 1948, belongs to the first generation of sound artists.  Kubisch’s practice ranges from performances, concerts, to works with video and visual art,  but she is best known for her sound installations and electro-acoustic compositions.

Kubisch created her personal artistic strategies by developing and transforming technologies such as  ultraviolet light, solar energy or electromagnetic induction. In her installations she merges audio and visual arts to create multi-sensory experiences for the participants, who are invited to become active as listeners and performers.

Since 2003 she has realised the ongoing series “Electrical Walks” worldwide, sound walks in urban spaces, where electromagnetic fields become amplified and audible by custom-made headphones.

Christina Kubisch has been a professor for audiovisual arts in Berlin, Paris, Saarbrücken and Oxford. She is a member of  Akademie der Künste, Berlin. Her installations, compositions and audio-visual works have been presented since 1973 in  solo and group exhibitions in Europe, USA, Asia, Australia and South America as well as in international festivals and group exhibitions. She received numerous grants and  awards such as the  Giga-Hertz award 2021 for her life achievement.

Christina Kubisch lives and works in Berlin.

Christina Kubisch, born in Bremen in 1948, belongs to the first generation of sound artists. After studying in Germany, Switzerland and Italy, she lived in Milan until 1987. Trained as a flutist and composer, she manifested herself very early as an artist at the intersection of visual art, media and music. In the 1970s, these included above all gender-critical performances and the cycle of Video-Concerts created in collaboration with the Italian artist Fabrizio Plessi. Since the beginning of the 1980s her work continues with space-related sound installations, work with magnetic induction and other self-developed audiovisual means. In the mid-1980s she began to include light as an additional medium in her works and created large-scale site-specific installations combining visual and acoustic elements.

In 2003 she started the Electrical Walks series – sound walks in urban spaces, where electromagnetic fields become amplified and audible by custom-made headphones. The Electrical Walks have been realized since then in 84 cities and will Biocontinue to be realized worldwide.

Christina Kubisch has had solo exhibitions in museums and galleries in Europe, Asia, Australia, North and South America since 1974. She has participated in numerous international festivals and group exhibitions. These include pro musica nova in Bremen 1976 and 1980, Für Augen und Ohren in Berlin 1980, Biennale di Venezia 1980,1982 and 2021, documenta 8 in Kassel 1987, Ars Electronica in Linz 1987, 2007 and 2020, Biennale of Sydney 1990, Donaueschinger Musiktage 1993, 1997 and 2011, sonambiente in Berlin 1996 and 2006, Sonic Boom in London 2000, sounding spaces in Tokyo 2003, B!AS International Sound Art Exhibition in Taipei 2005, Invisible Geographies in New York 2006, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 2007, Sound Art.
